Things To Do While On Quarantine

Things To Do While At Home During The Quarantine

Here we all are, stuck in our homes with nothing to do. Well, most of us at least. We might as well take advantage of the time we have. I am working on a list of constructive tasks to accomplish while on lockdown. This is an opportune time to take care of some of those chores that you have been putting off. No excuses. I will be adding to the list as ideas come to mind. If you have one to add please let me know and I will add it.

  1. First, take a moment to be grateful for the time with the family. Play a game. Tell a story. Make a memory. Family history, how the parents met, favorite memories, or favorite places to visit are all topics of discussion.
  2. Get organized. Part 1. Clean out those closets. Do you have clothes or coats you don’t wear anymore. I read somewhere that a way to figure out what to keep and what to throw out is to turn all of your hangers in your closet  backwards. As you wear something put it back the right way. In six months or a year, whatever is still backwards needs to go. Give it away to family or friends or donate the clothes. If you don’t want to give it away then check with a consignment store. If they don’t want it then it is time to donate or toss it.
  3. Self-reflection. Are there any holes in my game and what do I do about it? Is my employer operating while I am at home? What am I doing wrong? What am I doing right? An opportunity for growth and improvement.
  4. Insurance check-up. Now would be a great time to go over your homeowners and vehicle insurance. First, make sure you understand what you have. Verify you have the right amount of coverage. Reach out to a few friends and ask for references and get a few quotes. You might save some money. Don’t forget to check the life insurance policy.
  5. Be prepared to get prepared. Were you ready for this crisis? If not, how do you avoid being ill prepared the next time.
  6. Financial health check-up. Do a monthly budget. You may be surprised where your money goes when you write it down. Check out those automatic subscription withdrawals. You may be paying for something you do not use.
  7. Learn a Thing. Research that subject you have always been curious about. Work on picking up a new skill. Stretch your horizons.
  8. Get organized. Part 2. Clean out the garage, shed, basement, storage unit, or whatever space you have cluttered. If you don’t want to give it away then sell it. Donate it and write that off on your taxes.
  9. Check the batteries in the fire alarms. While you are at it, check the fire extinguisher. Do you have a plan if there is a fire? Make a plan.
  10.  HVAC system maintenance. Check your air filters and get your air conditioner ready for the summer. If you are not sure you can clean and inspect it yourself then hire an HVAC company. It is their slow time of the year and a good way to support local businesses.
  11. Go Green. Make sure your home is as energy efficient as possible. Research how you can use less energy which will lower the utility bills. Are you recycling everything you can?
  12.  Make a will. I know that feels morbid but it is the responsible thing to do. There is no reason to leave your family guessing as to what your wishes are. Get your affairs in order. If not now, then when?
  13. Plant a garden. A good idea to be able to plant your own food and excellent family project.
  14. Vehicle Maintenance. Check and change all the fluids on your vehicles, lawn mowers, hover craft, vacuums, or whatever mechanical thing you have at your house. Now is a chance to teach your kids how to conduct such maintenance or make them do it and watch while drinking a beer.
  15. Take an Online Class. Take the writing class, cabinet making, cooking class, speech making, or how NOT to be an ass class. Learn that thing you should already know about. Teach yourself something that can save you some money in the future.

That seems like a handful and enough to keep most of us busy. I have a few to do myself. If anyone has any ideas to add please contact me and I will add them to the list.
